While BIA has put together an organized and lauded plan, I share these remarks from Lolis Elie's column in today's Times Picayune or at http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/metro/index.ssf?/base/news-15/1150870271292620.xml
| Quote: | For years, I've been trying to figure out why the New Orleans City Council pulls out the rubber stamp almost every time a developer proposes a new project in one of our historic districts.
...The best explanation I can come up with for council members' enthusiasm for such terrible ideas is this: They approve these ideas because they have no ideas of their own.
...There would seem to be a lesson in that. If the mayor or the City Council had a vision for the city, they could encourage and support development in appropriate areas and discourage it in the French Quarter, where the commercial interests have all but taken over.
Lacking such a vision, they wait around until a developer tells them what to think. |
Although he references the Quarter specifically, I share this information for those BIA folks monitoring the approvals by City Hall. |
